Apply a non heading style to the whole paragraph 2. Select the first sentence up to the full stop but not including the space after the full stop. Select the remainder of the text excluding the space after the full stop and excluding the paragraph mark at the end. Apply the heading style to this selection. Create the TOC. Show the result someone else. They will go crazy trying to work how it is done.

Heading styles typically have spacing before and after the paragraph and when used in a table causes the row height to increase which can upset layout. A custom style based on the heading style but with no before and after spacing will overcome this. However, the custom headings will not ordinarily show up in the TOC. In a similar manner, a custom heading style might be needed where headings are numbered but a TOC entry is also required for unnumbered headings such as Introduction or Appendix.

The "Outline levels" option puts a u switch in the TOC field which causes only styles with outline numbering to be selected but inbuilt heading styles will be selected even if they do not have outline numbering. A custom style even if based on an inbuilt heading style will not be selected with the u switch active unless it is actually given outline numbering.

There are a couple of other ways of including custom styles in a TOC that I won't elaborate on here. TOC generation can get complex if you stray outside of a vanilla TOC using inbuilt heading styles and it is not helped by quirks in the system.

For example, are specific headings or specific levels missing from the TOC?

By default, Word includes only a few of the built-in heading levels in a table of contents. Which styles are being used for headings and for appendixes, respectively?

You can take a screen shot and show us what you see. Yes it is happening often. I am using templates supplied by my work to populate test procedures. It seems after a number of updates to the document when updating the ToC to incorporate the changes of page number or headings that it suddenly shortens and I can't see any way of recovering the table. I have went with another copy of document content into a blank template again which has resolved the issue once more.

I will try and keep an eye on the issue re-occurring to see if there is any pattern related to adding headings or number of times the ToC is updated. I am not in control of any updates to word due to using it on my company's laptop. Any office updates are controlled through our IT department. If you are saying that you used the TOC Heading style for the headings in your front matter, then you need to change the style of those headings to some other unnumbered style that is, for example, identical to but not based on Heading 1 or other numbered heading style. If you're saying you have some Heading 1 paragraphs with numbering and some without, that is not really the way Word's multilevel list numbering is meant to work.

Hi there! I just researched this question but I ended up finding out what was wrong. Using Mac Word, when you place word headings as they are programmed Heading 1 and you change the spacing of it to move it up so it doesn't look too spaced out, it actually takes it out of format /30306.txt when you click to make a table of contents it wont read it as a Heading. Leave the factory spacing microssoft format the way it shows up, as Word programming is extremely sensitive.

If you are going to make a heading:. Then when you complete your document Insert your table of contents before your first heading depending on your writing style And it will show all headings. Then we need to have more specific information. At the very least: Exactly which styles are you using? How many levels are you calling for? Which levels are appearing? Which ones aren't? What additional microsoft word 2013 table of contents not showing all headings free can you supply? For future reference, reinstalling Office on a Mac is rarely the approach to resolving most issues that arise. Those issues typically are not caused by the software contained on the source disk but are the result of user files generated after installation nkt within the document, itself.

Reinstalling does nothing to change any of that, and if it should happen to be due to a bug in the software the bug is just reinstalled as well. Regards, Bob J. This site in other languages x.

I have a total of 4 headings levels that I would like to display in my TOC. Even though I have the levels set at 4, the TOC only shows headings 1, 2, and 3; it does not show headings 4. I have seriously been trying everything, but cannot seem to figure out why all my headings will not display in the TOC.

The most likely cause is that the Heading 4 paragraphs have been manually reformatted in some way that prevents them from being recognized as expected.
